Tenth May, 1934. At this moment I look up and see the Man Who Lives Next Door standing on his doorstep watching my antics, and disapproving (I feel sure) of my flowered silk dressing gown. Probably his own wife wears one of red flannel, and most certainly has never been seen leaning out of the window in it - The Awful Carrying On of Those Army People - he is thinking.

Vivacious, young Hester Christie tries to run her home like clockwork, as would befit the wife of British Army officer, Tim Christie. However hard Mrs Tim strives for seamless living amidst the other army wives, she is always moving flat-out to remember groceries, rule lively children, side-step village gossip and placate her husband with bacon, eggs, toast and marmalade. Left alone for months at a time whilst her husband is with his regiment, Mrs Tim resolves to keep a diary of events large and small in her family life. Once pen is set to paper no affairs of the head or heart are overlooked.

When a move to a new regiment in Scotland uproots the Christie family, Mrs Tim is hurled into a whole new drama of dilemmas; from settling in with a new set whilst her husband is away, to disentangling a dear friend from an unsuitable match. Against the wild landscape of surging rivers, sheer rocks and rolling mists, who should stride into Mrs Tim's life one day but the dashing Major Morley, hell-bent on pursuit of our charming heroine. And Hester will soon find that life holds unexpected crossroads....

Mrs Tim of the Regiment is part of The Bloomsbury Group, a new library of books from the early 20th-century chosen by readers for readers.

I have enjoyed every one of D.E. Steven's so far. I had a bit of trouble getting into this one because the diary style was so different at the beginning. But, as it went on, I fell into it and forgot about it as the story unfolded. Truthfully, as it developed, the author seemed to forget about the daily entries as well. It became a narrative and the characters were so well developed and the situations so interesting that this is one of my favorites. I hope I can find all the sequels!

Hester and Tim are charming. They've been married for some years so while they love each other, he tends to take her for granted sometimes. When she is invited to take a break while he is transferred with a promotion and needs to get the troops in shape, she has some adventures with her hostess in the Highlands that are unexpected.

This is a fun read that takes you to another time that is not so far removed from present, but the people show their character under difficult circumstances and don't whine about it. I love this book and I hope other readers do as well.

Mrs Tim of the Regiment (Audible Audio Edition) D E Stevenson Christine Rendel Audible Studios for Bloomsbury Books Reviews

I had read and re-read the Mrs. Tim books at the library years ago and loved them. Her stories are told with an innocence and humor that is sadly lacking in today's fiction. However, the library did not have the first book in the series, so this was a special treat for me. I have loved every D.E. Stevenson book that I have ever read, and wish I could get them all on my . I am happy to see some of the books from that period being re-published. When life gets a bit too much for me, I can turn to her or Miss Read to escape.

Mrs. Tim is a delightful woman, facing the challenges of the time on the pittance of salary her British Army officer/husband earned, adoring him and her children and beloved by the entire regiment and their wives (at lease most of their wives!). Tim seems to be an ADHD man, but she remains calm during his rants, which are funny themselves. Still, I think she enjoys the attention of Tony, her husband's fellow officer, although she never acknowedges this, even to herself.

Having been a career U. S. military wife myself, I can sympathize with the sadness of leaving friends, and the adjustments to the new life she feels. The descriptions of the Scottish neighbors she meets make such a picture that you must smile while reading them.

If you are looking for something different from modern fiction, give this little book a try.
Mrs Tim is a wife of an officer in a british regiment. It is a book of past generations which I enjoyed for the simplicity of the time, if you were wealthy or connected. But either way it was a lovly book with a good deal of humor and a fun story. The characters are described and presented in a way that you could easily see them as real people that you knew. This book is lovely for the older generation who are more intuned with the victorian era. I enjoyed it very much and would recommend it highly to people who are interested in a time when things were slower and easier. We are now so frantic to get it all done and work harder and communicate more and more. There seems to be little quiet time, to rest and look around at the beauty that is here. I enjoyed the simplicity and the flow of the book and of the subject. Judyjo
Written in a most unusual first person manner, Mrs Tim of the Regiment opens an excruciatingly honest window into the lives and doings of the "military family" as seen by the wife and homemaker. Brutally honest, in part sad, in others so funny, this book is as hard to put down as anything D E Stevenson has ever written, and I am sure it is still relevant to today's military families struggle to fit in to an everchanging social scene. It also underlines the very real need for all us civilian families to accept, support and cherish these families of our fighting soldiers, at all times, not just in war time. Should be a "must read" for everyone.
Some places were way overdone with adjectives by the dozen that added nothing to the story. A large portion has Hester gadding about with the Major which seemed inappropriate to married Hester.
The first half is a bit boring - daily journal entries about grocery shopping, packing up the house to move, house hunting and meeting new people. Ho hum. The second half focusses on Mrs. Christie's trip to Scotland with a few adventures and scrapes as well as lovely descriptions of the places she sees and visits. I liked this book, but if I read it again I would skim the first half to get to the more delightful second half.
This book, written in diary form, gives an account of the experiences of the wife of a British soldier during the years between the two world wars. The story is humorous and, at times, poignant. The best part of the book, to me, is the account of Hester's holiday in Scotland with her friend Mrs. Loudon. She finds herself caught in the uncomfortable situation of being asked to help to break up an unsuitable romance, and she closely observes the behavior of two feuding families. She also deals with an entanglement of her own.
I enjoy the stories within the story that give a glimpse into history.
I recommend this book. The only complaint I have is the lack, or poor placement, of punctuation, which leads to some distracting confusion.
D. E. Stevenson has lately become one of my favorite writers. If you love Barbara Pym, Angela Thirkell, Elizabeth Taylor et all you will love this author.
She was a prolific writer and these novels are set in England and Scotland in the 1930's and '40's.
The protagonists are upper class women who are wives and mothers, and epitomize patience, good manners, kindness and bravery.
The books are also very funny and touching.
The character development is excellent and the simple stories and characters will stay with you.
Sentimental but you will also laugh and cry.
These books help you to understand a specific place and time "between the wars".
Mrs. Tim of the Regiment is the first of a quartet.
